Shelters & Campsites

Ranging from backcountry shelters, campgrounds you can drive to, and facilities that will provide you with a comfortable bed and a meal to fill your belly, there is plenty of variety in the types of places where you might rest your weary head.

We have listed one trailside accommodation in Massachusetts, 30 in Vermont and 24 in New Hampshire (south of Crawford Notch). Most are either on or in the vicinity of the AT in Vermont and the southern portion of New Hampshire, however some of the sites in the White Mountains are farther from the trail but listed here to facilitate planning a multi-day hike using the extensive trail network in that area. Because of this labyrinth of trails, there are often multiple ways of reaching the same trailside accommodation from the AT. We’ve tried to list all of them here.

There are 38 enclosed shelters or cabins, most of which are open-sided lean-to’s. Many of these shelter sites have tenting spaces around them, but some do not. There are nine primitive campsites which are accessible only by trail and two state park campgrounds which can be reached by road. Reservations are encouraged, especially during summer months and weekends. Ravine Lodge at the base of Mt. Moosilauke is operated by Dartmouth Outing Club. Lonesome Lake, Greenleaf, Galehead and Zealand Falls Huts are run by the Appalachian Mountain Club, and they also operate the Highland Center in Crawford Notch on US 302. The DOC and AMC facilities offer lodging and meals. Reservations are required. Many of the shelters and tentsites in popular areas (such as Stratton Pond and the White Mountains) charge a caretaker fee during peak times.
