Trail Connections – VT Rte. 12 to VT Rte. 14

While this section never gets above 2000′ in elevation, it crosses a number of ridges giving it something of a “roller-coaster” feel. The only side trail is a short access trail from Joe Ranger Rd. (south of the AT’s crossing of that road). However, there are a number of road crossings: Stage Rd., Totman Hill Rd., Bartlett Brook Rd., Pomfret Rd., Cloudland Rd. and Joe Ranger Rd. Stage Rd. connects Barnard with South Pomfret. Pomfret Rd. connects South Pomfret with West Hartford. The southern end of this section is VT Rte. 12 which connects Woodstock and Barnard. The northern end is at the intersection of VT Rte. 14 and Quechee-West Hartford Rd. Southbound from here, the AT follows Quechee-West Hartford Rd. across the White River Bridge and then enters the woods 0.3 miles west of the intersection. VT Rte. 14 is a major north-south state highway between Sharon and White River Junction. Thistle Hill Shelter is the only designated shelter on this section. Total distance: 12.6 miles.
